The Kind of Property We Are Looking For | Michigan Green Burial
While walking a beautiful property recently, we got a text from our realtor that it had JUST been put under contract with another firm buyer. It was just under an hour from downtown Grand Rapids, and within our budget. We were bummed about the timing of finding it and then it being purchased.
Nevertheless, we wanted to share with you why we loved it, so that you have an idea of what we are looking for.
This 20-acre property was surrounded on three sides by national forest - making it feel HUGE. It had trails meandering around white oak-white pine groves and a grassy understory. This is roughly the same composition of species present 200 years ago.
A clearing with a stately, solitary beech tree with draping branches would have been a special landmark for hundreds of years to come. The forest was serene and still. We could envision a memorial bench on the ridge overlooking the winding river.
So, the search continues. We have received overwhelming support since sharing our concept with our community, and are working hard to start offering natural forest burials in the West Michigan area.
